A Music Box (also Musical Box) is a 19th/20th century automatic musical instrument that produces sounds by the use of a set of pins placed on a revolving cylinder or disc so as to pluck the tuned teeth of a steel comb. They were developed from musical snuff boxes of the 18th century and called carillons à musique. Some of the more complex boxes also have a tiny drum and small bells, in addition to the metal comb.

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, most music boxes were gradually replaced by player pianos, which were louder and more versatile and melodious, when kept tuned, and by the smaller gramophones which had the advantage of playing back voices. Escalating labour costs increased the price and further reduced volume. Now modern automation is helping bring music box prices back down. (Wikipedia)

Music Box là một nhạc cụ tự động chơi được ra đời vào thế kỉ 19. Nhạc cụ này phát ra những âm thanh trong veo nhờ vào một bộ gồm nhiều gút gim nhỏ trên một trục dài quay tròn hoặc trên một đĩa nhạc, khi va vào dây đàn của một miếng thép( trông như lược thưa) thì phát ra âm thanh trong vắt.

Một số các hộp nhạc nhỏ (Globe Water) hoặc các trái tim có lồng ảnh (Locket) đôi khi xuất hiện trong khá nhiều phim hoạt hình. Các hộp phát nhạc xinh xinh này thường sử dụng trong hoạt hình của Nhật Bản, đặc biệt là trong các đoạn phim lãng mạn. Do tính chất văn hóa này nên trong từ ngữ Nhật Bản còn có một từ là orgel (オルゴール orugooru) để nói về thể loại nhạc từ hộp nhạc này.
