Paul Mauriat (March 4, 1925 – November 3, 2006) was a French orchestra leader, conductor, and composer renowned for his easy listening and instrumental pop music. Born in Marseille, France, Mauriat began piano lessons at age four, showing early talent. By 10, he enrolled in the Conservatoire de Marseille, mastering classical music, but his love for jazz and popular music shaped his career. At 17, he formed his first orchestra during World War II, performing in local venues.

In the 1950s, Mauriat moved to Paris, becoming a sought-after arranger and conductor for artists like Charles Aznavour and Maurice Chevalier. He adopted pseudonyms such as Del Roma and wrote hits like “I Will Follow Him” for Petula Clark in 1962. His breakthrough came in 1968 with “L’amour est bleu” (Love Is Blue), an instrumental cover of André Popp’s Eurovision song, which topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks and sold millions worldwide. This success defined his signature lush, orchestral sound, blending strings, brass, and subtle rhythms.

Mauriat’s extensive discography includes over 100 albums, with hits like “Chariots of Fire” and “El Bimbo.” His Le Grand Orchestre de Paul Mauriat toured globally, particularly in Japan, where he enjoyed immense popularity, performing over 1,000 concerts and earning a Golden Disc Award in 1974. Albums like Blooming Hits (1967) and Penelope (1970) showcased his ability to transform pop and classical melodies into accessible instrumentals, appealing to diverse audiences.

Retiring from performing in 1998, Mauriat passed the baton to Gilles Gambus but continued composing until his death in Perpignan, France, in 2006 at age 81. His music, with 1.2 million monthly Spotify listeners as of 2025, remains a staple in easy listening, featured in films, TV, and commercials. Mauriat’s legacy endures through his timeless arrangements, influencing instrumental music and evoking nostalgia worldwide.
