Nestor Alexander Haddaway, born on January 9, 1965, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, is a Trinidadian-German singer best known for his 1993 Eurodance anthem "What Is Love." The son of a German marine biologist father and a Trinidadian nurse mother, Haddaway's early life was marked by family separation in the early 1970s. He lived with his father in Europe, then joined his mother in Chicago, before settling in the Washington, DC area at age nine. Inspired by jazz legend Louis Armstrong, he took up the trumpet at 14 and attended Meade Senior High School in Fort Meade, Maryland, where he joined the marching band and formed his first musical group, Chances.

After graduating, Haddaway briefly enrolled in medical school in 1987 but dropped out, finding it unfulfilling. He moved to Cologne, West Germany, working odd jobs in taverns and later organizing fashion shows through his company, Energy. His music career ignited in 1992 when he signed with Coconut Records, a subsidiary of Polydor. The debut single, "What Is Love," exploded onto the scene, topping charts in 13 countries, including Germany, and reaching number two in the US and UK. Selling over 2.6 million copies by 1994, it earned gold certifications worldwide and became a cultural phenomenon.

Haddaway's self-titled debut album, The Album (1993), followed with multi-platinum success in Europe, featuring hits like "Life" (1.5 million copies) and "I Miss You." His second album, The Drive (1995), included "Fly Away," while later releases like Let's Do It Now (1998) and My Face (2001, reissued as Love Makes) struggled commercially. "What Is Love" experienced revivals through its use in the 1998 film A Night at the Roxbury, Saturday Night Live sketches, and a 2008 Diet Pepsi ad. Haddaway collaborated with artists like Dr. Alban on "I Love the 90's" (2008) and The Mad Stuntman on "Up and Up" (2012), which hit the US Dance chart top 20.

As of 2025, Haddaway, now 60, resides in Kitzbühel, Austria, and Cologne, Germany. An avid baseball enthusiast, he plays for and sponsors the Kufstein Wolfins team, which won regional championships in 2019 and 2020. He continues performing on the nostalgia circuit and released the single "Lift Your Head Up" in April 2024, signaling his upcoming album Day After Day. With over 10 million records sold, Haddaway remains a Eurodance icon, his timeless hit enduring in pop culture.
