ABBA, the iconic Swedish pop group, was formed in Stockholm in 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Their name, an acronym of their first initials, became synonymous with catchy melodies and vibrant harmonies. The quartet first gained international fame after winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with “Waterloo,” which topped charts across Europe. Their blend of pop, disco, and Europop, marked by lush production and heartfelt lyrics, made them global superstars.

From 1975 to 1980, ABBA dominated with albums like Arrival (1976), featuring “Dancing Queen,” their signature hit, and Voulez-Vous (1979), with songs like “Chiquitita” and “Does Your Mother Know.” Hits such as “Mamma Mia,” “Fernando,” and “Take a Chance on Me” showcased their knack for infectious hooks. By 1982, personal tensions and divorces (Fältskog-Ulvaeus and Lyngstad-Andersson) led to a hiatus after their final album, The Visitors (1981), which hinted at a more introspective sound.

ABBA’s music endured through the 1990s and 2000s, fueled by the Mamma Mia! musical (1999) and its 2008 film adaptation, introducing their songs to new generations. They’ve sold over 150 million records, making them one of the best-selling music acts ever. In 2018, ABBA announced a virtual reunion, recording new songs for the ABBA Voyage project. Their 2021 album, Voyage, marked their first studio release in 40 years, with singles like “I Still Have Faith in You” earning critical praise. The ABBA Voyage holographic concert residency in London, launched in 2022, continues to draw crowds with its innovative technology.

As of 2025, ABBA’s legacy thrives, with 17.3 million monthly Spotify listeners and ongoing Voyage shows. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010, their timeless appeal cements their status as pop music legends.
