Phil Collins, born January 30, 1951, in London, England, is a renowned English drummer, singer, songwriter, and actor, celebrated for his work with Genesis and as a solo artist. A child actor in productions like Oliver!, Collins began drumming at age five, joining Genesis as drummer in 1970 and becoming lead vocalist after Peter Gabriel’s departure in 1975. His leadership transformed Genesis into a pop-rock powerhouse with albums like Duke (1980) and Invisible Touch (1986), featuring hits like “Turn It On Again” and “Land of Confusion.”

Collins’ solo career skyrocketed in the 1980s with Face Value (1981), driven by the iconic “In the Air Tonight.” Albums like No Jacket Required (1985), with chart-toppers “Sussudio” and “One More Night,” and …But Seriously (1989), including “Another Day in Paradise,” made him a global superstar. His emotive voice, pop sensibilities, and production skills earned him eight Grammy Awards and over 150 million records sold solo. Collins also composed for films, winning an Oscar for “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Tarzan (1999).

Despite health challenges, including hearing loss and nerve damage from decades of drumming, Collins continued performing. His 1996 album Dance into the Light and 2002’s Testify showed versatility, though they were less commercially dominant. Genesis reunited for tours in 2007 and 2020–2022, with the latter, The Last Domino?, marking their final performances due to Collins’ declining health, which limited his drumming and mobility.

As of 2025, Collins, now 74, has largely retired from touring but remains influential. His Still Not Dead Yet solo tour (2017–2019) showcased his resilience. Married three times, with five children, including actress Lily Collins, he lives in Switzerland. Recent archival releases and a 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction with Genesis cement his legacy.
