Nguyễn Thanh Thủy - Độc Tấu Đàn Tranh (2005)
| WAV+CUE | 256MB | Vietnamese Zither, Folk, Instrumental | Phương Nam Film | Covers |
Độc Tấu Đàn Tranh by Nguyễn Thanh Thủy is a remarkable solo album that highlights the expressive depth and cultural richness of the đàn tranh—Vietnam’s traditional 16-string zither. Released in 2005 by Phương Nam Film, this collection brings together two distinct yet intertwined musical traditions: Chèo, a northern Vietnamese theatrical folk genre, and Tài tử cải lương, the more dramatic and melancholic music of the southern region.

Across ten tracks, Nguyễn Thanh Thủy demonstrates extraordinary technical control and emotional sensitivity, making the đàn tranh sing, weep, and dance. The album opens with five compositions from the Chèo tradition, including “Luyện Năm Cung,” “Hề Mồi,” and “Đường Trường Tiếng Đàn.” These pieces are rhythmic and playful, offering listeners a glimpse into the theatrical energy of northern folk operas. Thủy’s precise plucking and nuanced ornamentation preserve the rustic charm of this genre while elevating it through refined artistry.

The second half of the album explores the soulful realm of Tài tử cải lương. Tracks like “Tứ Đại Oán,” “Nam Ai,” and especially “Dạ Cổ Hoài Lang” evoke deep nostalgia and longing. The đàn tranh’s timbre becomes almost vocal in these performances, capturing the bittersweet moods central to southern Vietnamese folk aesthetics. “Trường Tương Tư,” the closing track, lingers with poetic melancholy, leaving the listener in contemplative silence.

With its combination of historical significance, technical brilliance, and emotional storytelling, Độc Tấu Đàn Tranh is not just an album—it is a cultural document. Nguyễn Thanh Thủy’s performance offers both connoisseurs and newcomers a pure, meditative experience of Vietnamese traditional music at its finest.

The Đàn Tranh, also known as the Dan Thap Luc, is a traditional Vietnamese plucked, stringed instrument. It is similar to the Chinese guzheng and the only difference is that the guzheng has only one line of bridges, whereas this instrument has two.
