Du Cong is a renowned Chinese wind instrumentalist, best known for bringing the pan flute to prominence in Asia. Though he began his musical journey as a dizi (bamboo flute) player at the Shanghai Conservatory, it was his discovery of the pan flute in the early 1990s that marked a turning point in his career. In 1991, he released his debut pan flute album Meditation (沉思), which won a China Gold Record Award and sold over 100,000 copies. The success of this and later albums, including The Olive Tree (橄榄树) and Swan Lake (天鹅湖), earned him the nickname “Prince of the Pan Flute.”

Du’s path to success was far from easy. In a time when traditional Chinese music held low status, he often hid his flute and pretended to study piano just to avoid discrimination. After joining the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra as the lowest-ranking flutist, he took on restaurant gigs to make a living, even earning the ironic nickname “Bathroom Musician” due to his performances being broadcast through hotel sound systems.

Undeterred, Du reinvented himself with creativity and persistence. He developed unique playing techniques, such as one-handed flute and dual-voice bowed flute performances, which helped him stand out in the music world. His pan flute has since become a favorite for film and TV soundtracks, and he continues to be a first-choice session musician.

Known for his adaptability and love of experimentation, Du has mastered dozens of wind instruments from around the world. Whether performing in prestigious venues or trying out ancient ocarinas at home, he approaches music with ingenuity, humility, and an unwavering belief: “Whatever happens—I always find a way.”
