Du Cong is one of Asia’s most celebrated wind instrumentalists, best known for popularizing the pan flute in the Chinese-speaking world. Originally trained as a dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) player at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Du began his career at a time when traditional Chinese music held little prestige. Determined to find his own path, he spent long hours recording in studios, gradually building both his technique and reputation.

A turning point came in the early 1990s when Du encountered the sound of the pan flute on the radio. Captivated by its expressive tone, he began teaching himself the instrument using a handful of foreign cassette tapes. In 1991, he released his breakthrough album Meditation (沉思), which sold over 100,000 copies and won China’s Gold Record Award. His subsequent albums, including The Olive Tree (橄榄树), Romeo and Juliet (罗密欧与朱丽叶), and Swan Lake (天鹅湖), cemented his status as the “Prince of the Pan Flute” (排箫王子).

Beyond the recording studio, Du has contributed to numerous film and television scores, earning praise for his intuitive musicality and ability to convey deep emotion. His pan flute performances can also be heard in acclaimed works such as Sister Drum (阿姐鼓), Yangjinma (央金玛), and Su Wu Tends Sheep (苏武牧羊). His inventive spirit has led him to explore rare and unconventional instruments from around the world. Nicknamed “Master of Every Hole” (无孔不入), Du can perform on a wide range of wind instruments, from South American panpipes to Indian flutes, ancient xun (埙), and even self-devised creations.

While musical trends continue to change, Du Cong remains relevant through constant reinvention. For him, every challenge is an opportunity for creativity. As he often says with a smile: “I always find a way.” His journey is a testament to resilience, curiosity, and the power of adaptation in art.
