Elton John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, in Pinner, Middlesex, England, is one of the most iconic singer-songwriters and pianists in music history. A child prodigy, he began playing piano at age three and won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at 11. In the 1960s, he worked as a session musician and formed a songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin, a collaboration that would define his career. Adopting the stage name Elton John, he released his debut album, Empty Sky (1969), followed by the breakthrough Elton John (1970), featuring “Your Song.”
The 1970s marked his rise to superstardom with albums like Tumbleweed Connection (1970), Madman Across the Water (1971), and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973), which included hits like “Rocket Man,” “Candle in the Wind,” and “Bennie and the Jets.” Known for flamboyant costumes and dynamic performances, John dominated charts with his blend of pop, rock, and ballads. He founded Rocket Records in 1973 and scored hits through the 1980s with songs like “I’m Still Standing” and “Nikita.”
Despite personal struggles with addiction, John achieved sobriety in 1990 and continued releasing successful albums, including The One (1992) and Made in England (1995). His 1997 re-recording of “Candle in the Wind” for Princess Diana’s funeral became the best-selling single ever. He composed for The Lion King (1994), winning an Oscar for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” and later for Billy Elliot and Rocketman (2019), a biopic about his life.
As of 2025, John, now 78, has sold over 300 million records, with 33 studio albums and hits like “Tiny Dancer” and “Sacrifice.” His Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour (2018–2023) marked his retirement from touring. Knighted in 1998, married to David Furnish with two sons, John remains a cultural icon and advocate for AIDS research.
