Foreigner, a British-American rock band, was formed in New York City in 1976 by English guitarist Mick Jones, American vocalist Lou Gramm, British drummer Dennis Elliott, British multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, American bassist Ed Gagliardi, and American keyboardist Al Greenwood. The band’s name reflects its transatlantic lineup, with three British and three American members. Their self-titled debut album (1977) sold over four million copies, featuring hits like “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold as Ice.” Double Vision (1978) and Head Games (1979) followed, with tracks like “Hot Blooded” and “Dirty White Boy,” cementing their success.

In 1980, McDonald and Greenwood were dismissed, leaving a quartet that released the chart-topping 4 (1981), including “Urgent” and “Waiting for a Girl Like You.” Their 1984 album, Agent Provocateur, produced their biggest hit, “I Want to Know What Love Is,” topping charts globally. After Inside Information (1987), Gramm left in 1990, replaced by Johnny Edwards for Unusual Heat (1991), which underperformed. Gramm returned in 1992 for The Very Best ... and Beyond and Mr. Moonlight (1994). He departed again in 2003, and after a brief hiatus, Mick Jones reformed the band with new frontman Kelly Hansen in 2005.

Foreigner has sold over 80 million records worldwide, with 38 million in the US. Their later years saw Can’t Slow Down (2009) and reunion shows with past members like Gramm, Greenwood, and Wills. Health issues sidelined Jones, the last original member, during the 2023–2024 farewell tour, with Hansen leading until his departure in 2025, passing the torch to guitarist Luis Maldonado. Foreigner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024, celebrated for their enduring anthems and global impact.
