Joy, an Austrian Eurodisco pop band, was formed in 1984 in Bad Aussee by school friends Andreas (Andy) Schweitzer, Alfred (Freddy) Jaklitsch, and Manfred Temmel. Initially pursuing separate careers—Schweitzer as a policeman, Jaklitsch as a teacher, and Temmel as a DJ—they reunited to focus on music, signing with OK Musica. Producer Michael Scheickl, a 1982 Eurovision veteran, guided their early work. Their debut single, “Lost in Hong Kong” (1985), flopped, but “Touch by Touch” became a chart-topping hit across Europe, earning gold status in Austria, Portugal, and Spain. Their first album, Hello (1986), charted in over 30 countries, with “Valerie” gaining popularity in Eastern Europe, notably reaching No. 3 in the USSR.
In 1986, Joy released Joy and Tears, featuring “Japanese Girls,” which hit No. 14 in Austria and sparked massive popularity in Asia. Their 1987 Asian tour drew over 60,000 fans, including sold-out shows in Seoul. The band performed behind the Iron Curtain, appearing on the GDR’s Ein Kessel Buntes, and played U.S. concerts for Chinese and Vietnamese audiences. However, by 1988, internal shifts led to Schweitzer’s departure, and Jaklitsch and Temmel briefly continued with vocalist Anzo Morawitz. The 1989 album Joy flopped, leading to a hiatus.
In 1994, Jaklitsch and Temmel reformed Joy, signing with BMG Ariola and releasing “Hello, Mrs. Johnson.” Joined by Johannes Groebl, they recorded Full of Joy (1995), but BMG shelved it, prompting another break. Jaklitsch and Temmel then formed the successful Austrian band Seer. Joy reunited in 2010 to celebrate their 25th anniversary, releasing Enjoy (2011), which hit No. 21 in Austria and included new tracks and remakes of hits like “Touch by Touch.” They performed at retro festivals in Estonia and Russia. Since 2012, Jaklitsch’s focus on Seer reduced his involvement, with Scheickl, Schweitzer, and Temmel continuing as Joy, releasing the single “Lunapark” in 2016. As of 2025, Joy remains active, capitalizing on 80s nostalgia.
