Bad Boys Blue, a German pop and Eurodance group, was formed in Cologne in 1984 by producers Tony Hendrik and Karin van Haaren. The original lineup featured Jamaican lead vocalist Trevor Taylor, British singer John McInerney, and American Andrew Thomas. Their debut single, “L.O.V.E. in My Car,” flopped, but “You’re a Woman” (1985) became a major hit, reaching the top 10 across Europe. Early successes like “Pretty Young Girl” and “I Wanna Hear Your Heartbeat” established their melodic, danceable sound, often compared to Modern Talking.

In 1987, “Come Back and Stay” marked McInerney’s transition to lead vocalist, as Taylor was gradually demoted and left in 1988. Taylor briefly rejoined for the 1989 single “Hungry for Love” but died of a heart attack in 2008. Trevor Bannister replaced Taylor, boosting the band’s popularity in Eastern Europe, particularly Russia and Ukraine, before leaving in 1993. The group then operated as a duo until Mo Russel joined in 1995, contributing as a composer and occasional lead singer. Kevin McCoy joined as a rapper in 1998, becoming a full member in 1999 until 2003, and rejoined Andrew Thomas’ separate “Real Bad Boys Blue” in 2005.

After a 2005 split, McInerney continued as the main act, joined by Carlos Ferreira in 2006. Andrew Thomas died in 2009, leaving McInerney as the sole original member. The band released Heart & Soul (2008) and the anniversary album 25 (2010), featuring re-recorded hits. Kenny “Krayzee” Lewis briefly joined in 2011, and a new album, 30 (2015), included fresh tracks and remixes. In 2023, Bad Boys Blue toured the US with Samantha Fox and Boney M.

With 15 studio albums and hits like “Come Back and Stay,” the band remains a Eurodance staple, maintaining a strong fanbase in Eastern Europe and beyond as of 2025.
