Tam Po-shek (譚宝硕) is a renowned dizi and xiao player, xiao craftsman, and accomplished artist in the fields of calligraphy and painting. A versatile cultural figure, Tam is also active in poetry, literature, and music.

From a young age, he studied calligraphy, painting, and Chinese bamboo flutes, inheriting the Lingnan artistic tradition. He later devoted himself to mastering the techniques, craftsmanship, and historical-cultural research of the xiao (Chinese vertical bamboo flute). His artistry reflects not only technical excellence but also deep cultural insight and spiritual cultivation. His contributions to the art of the xiao have earned him recognition in mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, and France, where media outlets have featured him in interviews and documentaries.

Tam’s performance career has taken him around the globe. In Hong Kong, he has been a prolific contributor to music for albums, advertisements, and film scores, having performed on hundreds of recordings and over twenty films. His xiao and dizi performances are also featured in popular Chinese television dramas, including Story of Yanxi Palace and Winter Begonia.

His music is often described as a “voice from the soul,” and he is celebrated for using the xiao to narrate profound stories. He has released thirteen xiao music albums, including The Voice of Xiao Soaring through Heaven and Earth, which was awarded “Most Popular Album” at the 2018 Beijing International Audio & Music Festival.

In addition to his musical accomplishments, Tam is a highly respected calligrapher and painter. In recent years, he has brought calligraphy and painting to the stage through multimedia performances, integrating visual art with live music. Media reviews have praised his performances: “With the rhythm of notes, he splashes color onto paper as if dancing — every movement capturing the audience’s gaze like a magnet.”

Tam is also a prolific writer, with published works including Dizi Techniques, Xiao Scores, the essay collections Falling Leaves in Heaven and Earth and Stories of Hong Kong, the calligraphy and painting collection Freedom in Ink and Brush, and the photo album In Search of Happiness. He writes regularly for publications such as Warmth of Humanity and Hong Kong Buddhism.
