Released in 2005 by Anhui Audio & Video Publishing House, Soul Sound – Yan Xia Yu Yi (檐下雨意), translated as The Mood of Rain Beneath the Eaves, is a refined and deeply emotive collection of traditional Chinese instrumental music. Featuring a diverse ensemble of instruments—erhu, yangqin, xun, paixiao, pipa, xiao, and guzheng—this album delicately weaves natural imagery, poetic nostalgia, and inner tranquility into eight beautifully arranged tracks.

The opening piece, “Jìng Wò Qín Shēng Lǐ” (静卧琴声里), performed on the ancient clay flute xun, immediately sets a meditative and contemplative mood. Its soft, earthy tones evoke the stillness of lying beneath a rainy sky. The following track, “Yáo Xiǎng,” with erhu and paixiao, paints a distant, dreamlike landscape—melancholic yet serene.

Each composition in the album is a dialogue between nature and memory. “Bié Gǎng” (Yangqin and bamboo flute) and “Qiū” (Erhu and guzheng) shimmer with bittersweet textures, evoking themes of parting and autumn’s quiet beauty. “Yī Yè Qīng Zhōu,” featuring erhu and yangqin, is particularly elegant, conjuring the image of a solitary boat drifting on calm waters.

The title track “Yán Xià Yǔ Yì,” enhanced by soft female vocals, is the emotional heart of the album—haunting and tender, it captures the essence of rain falling gently under the eaves. “Màn Yán” continues this lyrical approach with voix and paixiao, creating a floating, ethereal effect. The closing track, “Sī Xiāng De Jiǔ,” with dongxiao and pipa, ends the album on a warm, nostalgic note, like a quiet sip of wine while reminiscing about home.
